My use case is different from that, though - I'm going for tones more in the realm of Brian May/early Foo Fighters/Against Me! - Laura from Against Me! runs her AC30 through an additional extension cab, with Blues in both the amp and the cab, likely to avoid blowing up the speakers. That's why the rule of thumb is that your cab should be roughly 2x the wattage of the amp running into it, especially if you play with lots of overdrive.īeing that most Vox fans are going for clean, Beatles-ish tones, a pair of 15w Blues will last for ages. That's why Marshall Plexis were run through 8 greenbacks - if you crank that sucker through 4 greenbacks, they can and will blow up. A healthy tube amp will peak at around 1.5-2x its RMS wattage when overdriven/turned all the way up. And, if anyone is looking to offload a Weber 30w Alnico Blue Dog or a Scumback SC75 (either the 25 or 30w version), name your price - I’ll probably take it off your hands!Ĭlick to expand.30 watts is the RMS wattage - that's how many watts it will put out before it begins to overdrive. With all of those factors at play, I’ll likely end up with the Gold, but I’m curious what you folks have to say on the matter. I’d go the Weber or Scumnico route, but shipping from the States is ludicrous right now (and Scumback aren’t shipping to Canada right now anyway). The next choice would be the Celestion Gold, but at 50w each my concern is I’ll never push the gold into the “sweet spot” While I don’t intend to run the master wide open pretty much ever, I also just don’t like the idea of leaving myself open to the risk of frying a speaker that expensive. An AC30 will put out 45-50 watts max as far as I understand, especially when overdriven (I play in a punk band, it will always be overdriven). The thing about Blues, though, is they’re only 15 watts. The obvious choice for the other spot would be a Celestion Blue. I’m likely swapping at least one to a G12H30, and I’m thinking of an alnico of some description to take the other spot to get both ceramic tightness and alnico sweetness. I also want to swap the Wharfedale speakers out, and I’m trying to figure out if I’m just overthinking it. It’s currently away getting some mods done by Chris Church to bring it closer to JMI spec (Lyle Caldwell mods, etc.). I recently (ish) picked up a Vox AC30CC2 (the old model with The tube rectifier).
